Legal Glossary: Expungement

In California, those convicted of some types of crimes can get their criminal records sealed or expunged. This includes some, but not all, felonies. The defendant must have completed probation for the offense and either did not serve time in state prison, or served time in state prison before the passage of Prop 47. Expungement prevents employers and landlords from gaining access to an applicant’s criminal record.
